Decatur based singer/ songwriter Caroline Aiken was at Macon State College on Thursday Apr. 17. Aiken visited the campus as part of the MSC Arts Festival.

During her visit, Aiken held a performance in front of the Student Life Building on Thursday, April 17. She also offered a music workshop that evening for aspiring musicians. Both events were met with great response from the student body.

Aiken, a Georgia native, has a music career spanning 40 years. She is based in the Decatur/Atlanta area, but has played at arenas all over the country.

She has also played with many notable musicians including The Indigo Girls and Bonnie Raitt. Aiken’s song “Mama Louise’s H&H” (recorded live at the Georgia Music Hall of Fame) is going to be used at the New York City and Los Angeles premieres of “Almost Home,” the Allman Brothers movie.

During her performance at MSC, Aiken wowed the crowd with her sultry, bluesy voice and continued to entertain students and faculty with her ability to switch between instruments including two guitars, piano and harmonica.

She performed songs ranging from love songs to some more political in content. The crowd chanted along with her lyrics “high and mighty livin’ got a mighty high cost,” written about her stance on Washington politicians.

She also played her songs “Tower of Babel,” “Mothers Finest,” “We’re Having A War,” and the aforementioned “Mama Louise’s H&H.”

“I thought it was really refreshing. Her style was captivating. I appreciate Dr. Sidore for bringing this to Macon State,” said History major Laura Fortson of Macon.

Aiken listed some of her early musical influences as Joni Mitchell, The Allman Brothers, Chubby Checker, James Brown and Gilbert and Sullivan. “Music and arts, I think, are to a large part an escape, but I don’t think you escape very far, maybe you escape to reality. And that’s why people are in love with the arts… because they bring you to a place where you cannot arrive to in conventional thought or linear thought,” said Aiken.
